• Your Name: Mave
  • Your Location: MI - USA/Malaysia
  • What you do on Cyberlight: I draw the webmanga KingdomCome and am an active supporter of manga (Japanese styled comics) drawn by/for Christians.
  • Your Interests: Drawing/reading manga, music, crime investigation and consumer research. I was first inspired by Modesty Blaise, Archie and Disney in my drawings and eventually became interested in anime/manga after watching Robotech and Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. Even though I was made fun of then (“comics/cartoons are for kids, grow up!”), I continued to enjoy Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, and Ruroni Kenshin. I currently follow Naruto, Bleach, Detective Conan, Full Metal Alchemist and Blade of Immortal whenever I can, and a few shoujo titles such as Fruit Basket, HanaKimi, and The Wallflower.
  • Your Dislikes: Wasting resources (time, money and energy). For example, having to rewrite that long document you accidentally deleted/lost, taking 2-3 days to complete something that only really needed 1/2 hour, or wasting money on something you could have avoided such as parking fines (>.<). Aww man, isn’t that frustrating?! I would rather spend these resources on His Kingdom or something else more beneficial
  • Your favorite bands: Jars of Clay, 4Him, Delirious? and DCTalk are among some of the Christian music I listen to. I also enjoy Linkin Park, L’Arc-en-Ciel, Maaya Sakamoto and P- Graffitti (their name is terribly misleading, trust me).

  • Your favorite writer: Philip Yancey is the first Christian writer who has made an impact on me. His writings are very insightful and honest. He inspired me to never stop asking questions about my faith, and appreciating how the Grace Jesus brings makes the world go round. "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren is an additional excellent read for the application of the Christian faith. I also greatly enjoy John Grisham (The RainMaker, The Client, Painted House)’s style of writing. The way he writes just resonates with me…especially those that involve the law and justice system. Gotta love crime investigation.
  • Your secret origin: I grew up in a Roman Catholic family in Asia. I was baptized and confirmed at 18. I joined various college Christian fellowships later on. I currently consider myself non-denominational.

I’ve been reading manga for almost a decade, both shonen and shoujo types. I noticed a trend where some manga titles openly approve free sex and emphasize on the desperation of being the popular one. I did not agree with such values and couldn’t help wishing for manga with more favorable and inspiring characters. I looked into doujinshis as an alternate but the industry proved me wrong. My choices became more limited as time passed. One day, after reading Kaikan Phrase (NOT recommended, btw) I wondered, “What would have happened if Sakuya had found Jesus and become a Christian in the manga instead?” That’s how KingdomCome came about: a story about a popstar who rejects showbiz to seek his faith. I also include characters inspired by my real life Christian friends and share my experiences with the Christian faith. I hope to be down-to-earth, open and frank with my faith. I believe that there’s nothing wrong with questioning the faith and confronting controversies. Learning is a lifetime thing.

I first posted manga pages in Christian Anime Alliance (CAA) and the response was unexpectedly positive. Members encouraged me to move forward. It was a major step for me. My whole life then, I believed that drawing comics was a habit I had just randomly cultivated and there was no good purpose for it. Some Christians even frowned on my comic interests and hinted that I should give it up so that I could serve God better! Kcome.net was established and while I was in graduate school, I did my best to make full use of time drawing in between research work/classes/assignments. I recall drawing manga pages as late as 3-5 a.m. because I didn’t have the time for it in the daytime! During my darkest days in graduate research, I was comforted by the fact that God’s work is still able to move on despite of it all. Now, that I’m finally out from school, I’m looking forward to more good times and projects!

  • Favorite Bible verse: Phil. 4:16 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, presents your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
