INTRODUCTION
"Where is the hope? I meet millions who tell me that they
feel demoralized by the decay around us.
"Death. Destruction. Disease. Prejudice. Hatred. Fear.
Loss. Hopelessness. Tragedy. Pain. Anger. War.
Everyday, we face these elements in the daily news, in the world around
us, in our country, in our state, in our city, and all too often, in our own
homes.
"Where is the hope? The hope that each of us has is not in who governs
us, what laws are passed, or in what great things we do as a nation."
Indeed, in our 200-plus years as 'the great nation,' all of our efforts
have done little to eliminate, or even reduce, the darkness that stretches itself
out across the land.
Brother fights brother. Daughter fights mother. Son turns against
father. How can we hope to impact the world for good, when we cannot win
the battles at home?
Do we need another hero? Perhaps. History has given us several to
chose from. Writers have given us many more. We certainly do not
suffer from a lack of heroes and role models to look up to.
Many say we need a hero... and many are seeking. Movies featuring heroes
continue to break sales records. While books giving us more examples,
and even teaching us how to be heroes ourselves, are on the increase. Maybe
we need another hero... but, just maybe, we've been looking in the wrong places.
Fast forward 20 years from today. Enter Tammy Saiko Tanaka. At 18
years of age, she's had more skeletons in her closet than most. The foundation
of her home life began falling apart many years ago. To escape, Tammy
hangs at parties and takes drugs we have not even heard of yet. Her heart,
and spirit, are very dark and heavy, as she struggles to pull through
each day. The darkness in her life continues to take from her.
And she's about to lose what little
she has left. Some would say that Tammy needs a hero.
Can one really make a difference? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Tammy
is about to find out.
